Blue Demons score six runs in the last two innings to clinch the victory

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The DePaul softball team returned to action on Saturday morning and earned a 9-6 win over Missouri-Kansas City in come from behind fashion.

Despite falling behind early after a two-run first inning for UMKC, the Blue Demons battled back in the first with a Jessica Cothern double followed by a Kate Polucha RBI single.

Both squads went scoreless in the third before DePaul (2-1) took the lead for the first time in the fourth inning. Polucha reached base on a double and junior Tori Meyer brought her home with an RBI single. Maranda Gutierrez got in on the action with an RBI double to send Meyer home and put the Blue Demons on top 3-2.

UMKC (2-1) went on to tack on two runs in the fifth before a three-run fifth for DePaul put the Blue Demons back on top. Gabby O'Riley homered to neutralize the contest at 4-4. Before a Meyer double brought Polucha home from first. Freshman Nicole Sullivan notched her second hit of the afternoon to push Meyer across the plate and widen the lead to 6-4.

The Blue Demons put the game out of reach in the sixth with a three-run inning to push the lead to 9-4. After Gutierrez and Scalzitti reached base, Cothern singled to bring the lead runner home while a throwing error by UMKC allowed for Scalzitti and Cothern to score.

UMKC added two runs in the top of the seventh but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback.

Senior Krista Dalgarn notched her first win of the season in the circle, pitching three innings and recording five strikeouts on the morning.

DePaul returns to the field at 2 p.m. to face crosstown rival Loyola.
