Softball Opens Season with 8-0 Win Over Valparaiso

Blue Demons top Valparaiso in five inning victory
ROSEMONT, Ill. – The DePaul softball team started the game quick and never looked back in an 8-0 rout of Valparaiso on Friday afternoon.
The bats were hot early when Gabby O'Riley launched her first home run of the season over the left field wall in the bottom of the first.
After a three-up three-down second by senior pitcher Natalie Halvorson, Brooke Johnson reached base on a double to right field before a Tori Meyer double drove her home.
A five-run fourth inning opened up the game for DePaul. Pearl Barroso launched a three-run homer, scoring Johnson and Meyer for the first of homerun of her career.
Maranda Gutierrez put the Blue Demons over the top in the fifth inning with a solo homerun to right.
Halvorson pitched a complete game shutout and tallied seven strikeouts as the Blue Demons moved to 1-0 on the season.
DePaul (1-0) is back in action on Friday afternoon with a matchup against Western Michigan.
