Softball Hits the Road for the Coach B Classic

Blue Demons to play five games in three days in Carbondale, Ill.
CHICAGO – DePaul softball resumes competition on Friday after a weekend off with a five-game slate set for Feb. 26-28 at the Coach B Classic in Carbondale, Ill.
The Blue Demons will open weekend play against Ball State with first pitch set for 10 a.m. from Charlotte West stadium on the campus of Southern Illinois University. DePaul (3-2) will round out day one with a matchup against Saint Louis at 4:45 p.m.
Saturday's action begins at 2:30 p.m. as the Blue Demons take on the host Salukis followed by a 4:45 p.m. meeting with Austin Peay State. The weekend finale pits DePaul against Ball State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
The Coach B Classic is in its 18th season hosted by SIU in honor of former head coach Kay Brechtelsbauer.

Last Time Out: DePaul opened the 2021 season at the Rosemont Dome for a full weekend of contests Feb. 12-14. The Blue Demons went 3-2 on the weekend, with two of three wins coming in five innings. DePaul took down Valparaiso, Loyola Chicago, and Missouri Kansas City on the weekend and dropped contests to Western Michigan and Western Illinois (8 innings).
Meyer Selected to #BIGEASTsb Honor Roll: Sophomore outfielder Tori Meyer was selected to the BIG EAST weekly Honor Roll on Monday, February 25. Meyer was an integral part of the DePaul offense throughout opening weekend which saw the Blue Demons post a 3-2 record at the Rosemont Dome. The Barrington, Ill. native led the team with a .545 batting average in 11 at bats on the weekend. Meyer also recorded a team-best seven RBIs on six hits over the course of five games.
Where They Rank: After the first weekend of competition, DePaul ranks in the top-15 nationally in six offensive categories. The Blue Demons rank seventh in batting average at a .392 clip as a team while posting the 12th-best slugging percentage at .664. Blue Demon batters are reaching base at an efficient mark of .470, good for 10th in the country. DePaul has scored an average of 8.20 runs through its first five games to rank 15th. The Blue Demons have recorded 17 doubles to put them in 11th across all Division I softball programs.
DePaul Selected Second In BIG EAST Preseason Poll: DePaul was selected to finish second in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll as announced on February, 8th.Villanova was selected the preseason favorite with six first-place votes while the Blue Demons earned the three remaining first-place tallies. DePaul will rely on veteran experience with an infusion of young energy in its quest for a fourth-straight BIG EAST title. 15 letterwinners return from the abbreviated 2020 campaign while seven newcomers landed in Lincoln Park in the fall.
Series Stuff: DePaul leads the all-time series with Ball State 5-3, the last meeting between the two squads saw the Cardinals take the 5-2 victory in 2017… Against the Billikens of Saint Louis, the Blue Demons are 33-1 and have won the last nine meetings. The two squads last met in 2016…. When facing the Salukis, DePaul is 6-2 all-time. SIU took a 1-0 victory over the Blue Demons in at the Saluki Invitational in March of 2020… DePaul will meet Austin Peay State for the first time in program history on Saturday.
Scouting the Cardinals: Ball State opens their 2021 slate on Friday at the Coach B Classic. The Cardinals finished the shortened 2020 season 18-9, the third best record through 27 games in program history, including an 11-game winning streak. Ball State returns 19 players from last year's roster including all nine positional starters, a designated player and three starting pitchers. The Cardinals welcomed a new head coach in Lacy Wood in August of 2020.
Scouting the Billikens: Saint Louis enters the weekend slate with just one game under their belt, a 5-4 loss to Bradley. The Billikens went 8-13 in the abbreviated 2020 season and won their last three games before COVID-19 ended the season. The Billikens return 14 of 16 players from a season ago including 2019 A-10 Rookie of the Year, Gabbie Kowalik.
Scouting the Salukis: Southern Illinois enters the weekend 6-0 on the young 2021 season. The Saluki's six wins include a marquee victory over #22/24 Mississippi State in eight innings. SIU also holds wins over Murray State, Mississippi Valley State, South Dakota and Stephen F. Austin. Sophomore Tori Schullian leads the charge at the plate with a team-high seven hits on the season and four RBIs. Sophomore Carlee Jo Clark boasts a 0.00 ERA through 18 innings pitch and three appearances.
Scouting the Governors: Austin Peay State heads to Carbondale with a. 4-0 record after beating Western Carolina and Mercer each twice last weekend. The Governors have five different players hitting .400 or better after the first weekend of action. Freshman pitcher Jordan Benefiel leads the Govs in the circle with a .75 ERA through two appearances.
Next Up: After a trip to Carbondale, the Blue Demons will hit the road again to the Bluegrass state for a trio of games in Louisville. DePaul will play Louisville and Miami (Ohio) on Saturday, March 6 before facing the Redhawks on Sunday, March 7 to round out the weekend.
