Blue Demons score three runs in the ninth inning to top the Cardinals
An Angela Scalzitti run on consecutive wild pitches paired with a Brooke Johnson two RBI home run in the ninth inning proved to be the difference for the victorious Blue Demons.
In the top of the first, the Blue Demons loaded the bases with walks courtesy of Maranda Gutierrez, Jessica Cothern and Kate Polucha but couldn't bring runners home and left the bases stranded. In the bottom half of the inning, Ball State loaded the bases by way of two singles to left center field and a walk before a Krista Dalgarn throwing error sent two runners home to give the Cardinals the early 2-0 advantage.
DePaul (4-2) loaded the bases again in the third inning with an Angela Scalzitti walk followed by a Cothern walk. Gabby O'Riley took a base board after a hit by pitch. In the ensuing at bats, Polucha and Brooke Johnson we're retired to end the inning and leave the runners stranded.
Angela Scalzitti tied the ballgame at two in the fourth inning with a two RBI double to score Tori Meyer and Gutierrez. Scalzitti's double marked her fourth of the season.
In the fifth inning, Polucha made her way around the bases to third off of two Cardinals wild pitches before being called out at home.
The top of the sixth saw freshman Riley Pool earn a leadoff walk. Nicole Sullivan, Dalgarn and Gutierrez all reached on a fielder's choice. Scalzitti came to the plate with Gutierrez at second and Sullivan at third. Scalzitti took a base before Sullivan attempted to steal home and was tagged out to end the inning.
Neither side saw runs score in the seventh to force the contest to head to extra innings.
In the eighth inning, Brooke Johnson walked to leadoff followed by a Sullivan RBI single to score Rettig placed on second base giving DePaul the 3-2 lead. Looking for more offense, Dalgarn and Scalzitti both reached on a fielder's choice. Johnson was caught stealing home to end the inning, leaving three on base.
Ball State (0-1) answered with an RBI double of their own to tie the score at 3 and force a ninth inning.
The DePaul bats found their groove in the top of the ninth. Scalzitti initiated the scoring on consecutive wild pitches from second base giving DePaul a 4-3 advantage. Cothern reached base on a walk before a Polucha ground out advanced pinch runner Julyana Gomez. Gomez was later out at second following an O'Riley fielder's choice. Johnson's homer to center field pushed the margin to 6-3 heading to the bottom of the ninth.
Ball State would put up two more runs in the bottom of the ninth before three groundouts would seal the win for DePaul.
Krista Dalgarn threw a complete game and recorded her second win of the season in the circle. Dalgarn tallied nine strikeouts on the outing.
DePaul returns to action at the Coach B Classic with a matchup against Saint Louis at 4:45 p.m.
