Blue Demons come up short against 9-0 Saluki's
Carbondale, Ill. – DePaul softball returned to action at the Coach B Classic on Saturday afternoon and dropped a 6-4 matchup to undefeated Southern Illinois, 6-4.
The Saluki's struck early in the bottom of the first inning off of two hits and an RBI to take a 2-0 lead.
DePaul (4-3) would respond in the top of the second with consecutive walks from Gabby O'Riley and Nicole Sullivan. Both runners advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch putting . Skylor Hilger singled to bring both runners home and tie the game at 2-2.
Southern Illinois (9-0) regained the lead in the bottom of the second. Two consecutive batters reached based off of singles and advanced on a SAC bunt and wild pitch by DePaul's Krista Dalgarn. A SAC fly scored both runners and put the Saluki's ahead 4-2.
DePaul knotted the score at 4-4 in the fourth inning. O'Riley tallied a leadoff single followed by a Sullivan fielder's choice. Grace Frazier's single up the middle pushed Sullivan to second with Hilger's ground out advancing runners to scoring position. Maranda Gutierrez fired her first hit of the day down the left field line and scored both runners to put the Blue Demons even.
The sixth inning saw Southern Illinois record the go ahead runs off of a double with runners on second and third.
At the top of the seventh, Angela Scalzitti drew a leadoff walk before Brooke Johnson hit into a double play ending the contest.
DePaul continues play at the Coach B Classic against Austin Peay State on Saturday evening. The Blue Demons wrap up competition in Carbondale with a 10 a.m. matchup with Ball State.
