Timmy Iscra's second-half score gives DePaul first ever win over Creighton
CHICAGO - Senior defender Timmy Iscra scored the go-ahead goal in the 77th minute to lift DePaul men's soccer past Creighton at Wish Field on Saturday afternoon. DePaul (2-2-2, 2-2 BIG EAST) recorded its first ever win over the Bluejays (2-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) and collected its second-straight BIG EAST victory.
"I'm very happy for our guys," said head coach Mark Plotkin. "They put in another gritty performance today. Confidence can do a lot for a team and the guys brought that same energy and effort from Wednesday into today."
After competitive back-and-forth play for the first 25 minutes, DePaul's Jake Fuderer lined up a free kick from outside the box. Fuderer executed, curling a left-footed shot into the upper right corner to get the Blue Demons on the board. The score was Fuderer's third of the season, a team-best.
Creighton was able to respond with less than a minute remaining in the first half when Mitch Dobson snuck a shot past Drew Nuelle inside the DePaul 18-yard box. The score tied the contest heading into the half.
After the break, DePaul's offense kept pushing forward, tallying nine corner kick attempts in the game's final 45 minutes. On a corner in the 77th minute, Iscra found the ball at his feet at point blank range in front of the goalkeeper and was able to send in the go-ahead goal for the Blue Demons. Freshman midfielder Omar Ramadan picked up the assist after swinging in the cross on the corner kick.
The Blue Demons stymied Creighton's attacking chances down the stretch. The back half dug in and turned away a handful of Bluejay attacks in the game's final 15 minutes. Nuelle ended the match with six saves. The horn sounded at the 90-minute mark and DePaul hung on to earn the 2-1 result.
"Creighton is a quality opponent and we've never beaten them before," said Plotkin. "This is a big day for our team and is another step in the right direction."
Iscra now has goals in back-to-back games for the first time in his career. His goal in the second half on Wednesday versus Xavier, tied the match at two. The Blue Demons went on to win, 3-2, in overtime.
