Blue Demons put up three runs in the top of the seventh to secure come-from-behind win

QUEENS, N.Y. – In a rollercoaster of a contest, DePaul gutted it out together in a 6-5 victory over St. John's in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

DePaul (9-7, 2-0 BIG EAST) held a 3-0 after the top of the fourth inning behind two Jessica Cothern home runs. St. John's (3-4, 0-2) put three up in the bottom of the fourth to knot the game at 3-3 before taking the first lead of the day in the fifth inning, 5-3. With two outs remaining in the top of the seventh and the bases loaded, Brooke Johnson knocked in a base clearing double to give DePaul the go-ahead run.

Johnson and Cothern tallied two hits and three RBI's apiece to lead the Blue Demons offense, while Krista Dalgarn picked up her sixth win of the season surrendering just two hits and one earned run in her three innings of work.

In the second inning, Cothern got the Blue Demons on the board as she sent a solo shot out of the ballpark for her third home run of the season.

Kate Polucha tallied a leadoff double in the top of the fourth inning before Cothern went yard and brough Polucha across to give DePaul a 3-0 advantage.

St. John's battled back to tie the game in the fourth inning as the Marissa Rizzi and Peyton Cody led off the inning with singles. A DePaul error allowed another single to send Rizzi home. The Red Storm kept the inning alive with a two-run single that would plate the runners, and the game was knotted at three.

The Johnnies took a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning behind a leadoff single followed by an RBI triple and RBI single.

The Blue Demons were not going away easily. Angela Scalzitti notched a single before Maranda Gutierrez was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Cothern was walked to load the bases. With two outs in crunch time, Johnson delivered with a three-RBI double to put DePaul on top for good.

Dalgarn retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the victory for DePaul.

DePaul wraps up its weekend series with the Red Storm on Sunday, March 14 with first pitch set for 11 a.m. CT.
