Blue Demons Open BIG EAST Play at St. John’s

DePaul travels to Queens, N.Y. for three-game series
CHICAGO – DePaul softball is set to open the BIG EAST slate, March 13-14 at St. John's. The Blue Demons will travel to Queens, N.Y. to play a Saturday doubleheader and single game on Sunday.
First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT with game two following shortly after. Sunday's contest also features an 11 a.m. start.

DePaul at a Glance
The Blue Demons went 7-7 in early season non-conference action. DePaul went 3-2 in its season-opening tournament at the Dome in Rosemont, picking up wins over Loyola, Valparaiso and UMKC. The Coach B Classic saw the Blue Demons go 2-2 on the weekend with two games canceled, picking up wins against Ball State and Saint Louis. At the Cardinal Classic in Louisville, Ky. DePaul snagged a win over Miami (Ohio) 5-4. Angela Scalzitti leads the Blue Demons behind the plate with a team-high 15 hits on the season including five doubles, three triples and seven RBI's. Jessica Cothern owns 13 hits, two home runs and five RBI. In the circle, Krista Dalgarn and Natalie Halvorson have earned the bulk of the work with the two combining for 77.3 of the team's 94 innings. Dalgarn boasts a 4-1 record and a season total of 38 strikeouts.
Scouting the Red Storm
St. John's enters the weekend series with a 3-2 record on the season. The Red Storm most recently split a midweek doubleheader with Fordham. The Johnnies fell in game one 13-3, while securing a 4-3 victory in game two. At the plate, Marissa Rizzi and Peyton Cody lead the way. Cody has tallied three home runs and a team-high nine RBI's through five games while Rizzi has notched six RBI's and holds a batting average of .667. Pitcher Angela Saric holds the third-best ERA in the BIG EAST at 2.47.,

The Blue Demons lead the all-time series against the Red Storm, 29-7. The two programs last met in April of 2019 at Red Storm Field and split the pair of contests. DePaul has won six of the last 10 meetings.
Last Time Out
DePaul returns to the field after splitting a Monday doubleheader with Bradley on March 8. Game one saw Krista Dalgarn throw a career-high 11 strikeouts in a 4-1 victory. Maranda Gutierrez tallied two hits and three RBI's in the victory while Pearl Barroso scored one run, one RBI and tallied one hit. In a 2-1 loss, DePaul allowed just two Bradley hits in the first five innings before the Braves mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth inning to score two runs off of a pair of hits and a sacrifice fly for the go-ahead run. Brooke Johnson tabbed an RBI single to right field in the setback.

Following this weekend's action, the Blue Demons return to Lincoln Park for opening weekend at Cacciatore Stadium against Providence, March 20-21.
