Levine evens series with walk off hit
CHICAGO – After building a five-run lead and watching it slip away, DePaul softball stayed poised and answered in the eighth inning, plating the game-winning run to top Butler 6-5 in extra innings Saturday afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium.
Junior outfielder Morgan Rogers notched two doubles in her 2-for-4 outing at the plate, putting her at a conference-high 15 doubles this season. Junior Brooke Cwick recorded a pinch-hit single to drive in two runs for the second game in a row, her sixth multi-RBI game on the year. Zoe Levine went 2-for-3 at the plate on the day, including a walk off base hit in the eighth inning.
Senior Bella Nigey got the nod in the circle for game two, working 4.1 innings and turning in two strikeouts, two walks, and two earned runs. Sophomore Hannah Messer came in as relief in the fifth frame, covering 0.2 innings. Senior Kelly Greene closed out the remaining 3.0 innings, allowing just a pair of walks and zero hits in 12 batters faced to improve to 6-7 on the season.
How It Happened
DePaul (19-26, 7-13 BIG EAST) found themselves on the basepaths early as Rogers hit a double in the bottom of the first, but the Blue Demons were unable to bring her around to score.
Both DePaul and Butler went scoreless until the Blue Demons put up a big fourth inning. Rogers led off the inning with her second double of the day, followed by a base hit from Jolie Adams and a hit by pitch from Chelsea Parker to load the bases with no outs. Cwick delivered a single to drive in two runs and put the Blue Demons up 2-0. Addi Burdick followed with a pinch-hit RBI double of her own to extend the lead to 3-0. Freshman pinch hitter Camryn Eckhart reached on an error that plated an additional two runs, increasing DePaul's advantage to 5-0.
Butler (21-18, 12-8 BIG EAST) answered immediately in the top of the fifth, capitalizing on defensive miscues from DePaul followed by a couple of RBI hits, evening the score at 5-5.
The Blue Demons threatened to take the lead back in the bottom of the sixth by putting two runners on but were unable to bring them around to score. Both teams went quietly in the seventh to bring the game into extra innings.
Parker led off the bottom of the eighth with a base hit, followed by a double from Lydia Ettema to put two runners in scoring position. Kali Blount was intentionally walked to load the bases with no outs. Levine then reached on a base hit to seal the deal for the Blue Demons, walking it off in extra innings.
