DePaul claims its first conference win of the 2020-21 season
CHICAGO - Senior forward Morgan Turner delivered a game-winning goal on a header in the 102nd minute to give DePaul women's soccer a 2-1 win over Creighton at Wish Field on Sunday afternoon. After striking in the game's first five minutes, the Blue Demons were eventually able to score in the second overtime period to break a 1-1 tie and claim their first BIG EAST win of the 2020-21 season.
With the game tied at one at the beginning of the second overtime period, senior midfielder Gwen Walker lined up a free kick after a Creighton foul. Walker sent in a high cross from 30 yards out and Turner elevated to knock the ball past the Bluejay keeper. The score was Turner's second of the season and gave the Blue Demons the sudden-death victory.
"The conditions made the game very challenging but I'm proud of the toughness of our group," said head coach Erin Chastain. Both teams battled constant wind and cold conditions in Lincoln Park. "Although it was an ugly game overall, we found a way to be dangerous and will continue to look to get better in some areas that still need attention."
DePaul surged out to an early 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the ballgame. Sophomore forward Kristin Boos was able to knock home an opportunity that came on a well-placed cross by Turner. The score was Boos' first of the season and fourth of her career.
As the first half progressed, Creighton applied pressure to the DePaul defensive unit, racking up a total of four first half shots to DePaul's one. Despite the Creighton opportunities, DePaul's back half was effective, maintaining the 1-0 advantage at the half. After the break, however, the Bluejays were able to tie the game in the 67th minute on a free kick that was curled in by Ansley Atkinson. The score knotted the game at one.
In a game that was physical all afternoon, both sides upped the intensity during the game's final 20 minutes. DePaul defended eight second-half Creighton corner kicks and the Blue Demons were able to rack up five second-half shots. However, neither team was able to etch the go-ahead tally and the game headed to overtime.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Turner's goal came in the 102th minute off of the feed by Walker. Turner's overtime goal was her first game-winning tally in extra time since she scored to beat the Georgetown Hoyas on October 24, 2019.
