Men's Tennis takes down UIC 6-1 Saturday for its fifth win in a row
CHICAGO – DePaul men's tennis completed its drive for five Saturday at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Their first action in fresh air resulted in a dominant 6-1 victory over Illinois-Chicago for the Blue Demons' fifth win in a row.
It has been three weeks since coach Matt Brothers' surging program has tasted defeat.
The doubles competition began with reigning BIG EAST Athlete of the Week Vito Tonejc and Luuk Wassenaar beating Luiz Dos Santos and Casey Schrader 6-1 at the No. 3 position.
UIC (0-8) came back to win No. 2 doubles, but the No. 1 doubles team of Boris Spanjaard and Christopher Casati came through with a clutch 7-6 (8-6) triumph over Pelle Strandberg and Artem Iermolov to secure the doubles point.
Then came five consecutive singles victories that would lift the Band of Brothers to 8-2 on the dual-match season.
Wassenaar opened up with a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Dos Santos at No. 4 singles. In the No. 5 slot, Tripp Tuff upped the match score to 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Iermolov.
The clincher came at No. 3 when Spanjaard took down Gustavo Schwebel in straight sets 6-4, 6-2. Adding on were Casati over Anthony Nguyen at No. 2 by a margin of 6-3, 6-2 and No. 1 singles standout Vito Tonejc's 7-6, 6-1 win over Strandberg.
Tonejc has now won seven-straight singles matches while Casati is unbeaten in his last five.
"This was a good match for our first one outdoors," Brothers said. "I'm sure it will pay dividends for us next week."
Brothers & Co. will head to Tennessee on their spring break trip with outdoor matches against Lipscomb on Tuesday, Vanderbilt on Wednesday, Belmont on Thursday and Middle Tennessee State on Friday. Middle Tennessee State is ranked No. 35 in the Oracle/ITA Men's Tennis rankings.
