Face Belmont in second half of spring break trip doubleheader
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – DePaul took on its toughest opponent of the dual-match season so far in the first half of a Wednesday doubleheader in the Volunteer State.
The Blue Demons dropped a 6-1 decision to Vanderbilt, a program that came into Wednesday morning having already played nine times against nationally ranked teams.
Vanderbilt (5-9) opened up by winning the doubles point and won five of the six singles matches in snapping DePaul's five-match winning streak.
At No. 1 singles, Vito Tonejc put the Blue Demons on the board with a hard-fought, intense 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 third set, four-tiebreaker victory over George Harwell.
Tonejc extended his singles winning streak to eight in a row and improved his overall record to 9-1. The junior from Zagreb, Croatia has not lost a singles match since Feb. 7 at Western Michigan---a span of 45 days or 6½ weeks.
Coach Matt Brothers and his Blue Demons will take a short break as the players recuperate as best they can before making the short drive to Belmont for a 3 p.m. match on their spring break trip through Tennessee.
