Marquette claimed the win on a goal in the 107th minute
MILWAUKEE - DePaul men's soccer dropped a heart-breaker to the Marquette Golden Eagles at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis. on Wednesday evening. DePaul's Jack Richards struck for his first goal of the season in the early going but Marquette scored an overtime winner in the 107th minute to edge the Blue Demons, 2-1.
DePaul (2-4-2, 2-4 BIG EAST) forced the issue early on in the attacking end, possessing the ball for much of the first 15 minutes. Matty Brickman fired a shot to the high left side of the goal near the seven-minute mark but Chandler Hallwood, who earned BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honors last week, parried away the strike.
Minutes later, Kristian Malinich lined up a free kick after a penalty near midfield and quickly sent a deep pass over the heads of the Marquette defenders. Richards ran onto the ball and flicked a quick shot past Hallwood, notching his first goal of the season and propelling the Blue Demons to a 1-0 lead.
Marquette (7-1-1, 3-1-1 BIG EAST) was able to tie up the game in the 35th minute on a well-placed shot that carried just over DePaul goalkeeper Drew Nuelle. The sides entered the halftime break knotted at one. DePaul had dominated the first 45 minutes when it came to offensive chances, logging 12 shots to the Golden Eagles' two.
Marquette came out of the break with the first offensive chances but DePaul's Jake Fuderer had a key scoring opportunity for the Blue Demons in the 61st minute. Fuderer rifled a shot from outside of the box that banged off of the crossbar and deflected down behind Hallwood. However, the ball landed just infront of the goal line where Hallwood was able to collect it. DePaul had another key opportunity just after the 80-minute mark when Hallwood dove to stop a shot and Timmy Iscra's follow up attempt deflected out of play.
The Blue Demons totaled six second half shots while the Golden Eagles fired off seven. After a scoreless second half, the game headed to overtime.
After a scoreless first period of overtime, DePaul went on the attack quickly in the second half of the extra period. Marek Gonda made a long run into enemy territory and David Gripman found the ball in the middle of the box seconds later. However, Gripman's attempt on net was blocked and the Golden Eagles regrouped.
With less than four minutes remaining, Marquette lined up a free kick from about 35 yards out. Zyan Andrade swung in a cross that found the head of Alex Mirsberger who knocked it home to give the Golden Eagles the 2-1 win.
