Turner and Saipi score to tie match but DePaul falls in OT, 3-2
CHICAGO - DePaul women's soccer fought to force overtime on Senior Day on Sunday at Wish Field, but the Xavier Musketeers scored in the second extra period to claim a 3-2 win. DePaul's Morgan Turner scored the Blue Demons' first tally in the 82nd minute before Bina Saipi tied the game at two with just over a minute remaining. However, Xavier's Maddie Thiss scored in the 105th minute to win the game for the visitors.
"While we are disappointed with the result, I was proud that we came back from down 2-0 and ended the game playing DePaul soccer," said head coach Erin Chastain. "Their keeper did a great job in the overtime period to keep their team in it and we weren't disciplined enough on their set pieces today."
Xavier (3-5, 2-3 BIG EAST) built a 2-0 lead thanks to a first half goal by Rachel Butler and another goal in the 67th minute by Hailey Jakovich. Trailing 2-0, DePaul (3-4, 2-4 BIG EAST) began to play more aggressively on the offensive end, forcing the issue as time winded down.
In the 82nd minute, defender Grace Phillpotts sent a long pass forward to Turner. Turner settled the ball, turned, and fired with her left foot to send a perfect strike into the top left corner of the net. Turner's goal was her team-leading third of the season and pulled the Blue Demons within a goal with less than ten minutes on the clock.
With just over a minute remaining, Saipi collected a throw in and dribbled towards the top of the box. Saipi outran an ensuing defender and created enough space to fire off a right-footed shot. The 20-plus yard strike sailed over the outstretched reach of the Xavier keeper and found the back of the net. The incredible goal tied the match at two and forced overtime.
In the extra period, DePaul stayed on the attack, putting pressure on Musketeer keeper. Ellie Mink fired a strike from the edge of the box, but Oliva Jenkins parried away the attempt. In the second period of overtime, Xavier scored the winning goal after a corner kick rattled around in the box before being knocked home by Thiss.
DePaul honored its senior class prior to the match, recognizing the contributions of the seniors who have sacrificed and devoted so much for the program.
"I'm so proud of our senior class and the adversity they have faced and how they have stepped up and been leaders for our team," said Chastain. "We will miss them dearly and I know they will go on to do outstanding things in the world."
