Blue Demons win all six singles matches in straight sets at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness
CHICAGO – It was a nice start to the weekend for DePaul in the first of three consecutive matches close to home.
Facing a Cardinal Stritch team from Milwaukee that is No. 3 in the NAIA Men's Tennis Coaches Top 25, the Blue Demons racked up a 7-0 sweep Friday night at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
DePaul (4-2) dominated right from the opening serve. The doubles teams of Christopher Casati/Boris Spanjaard and Fran Tonejc/Tripp Tuff won their matches to claim the doubles point.
Spanjaard was the first singles player to record a result, a 6-1, 6-3 win over Michael Delabois at No. 2. Vito Tonejc maintained the momentum defeating Niccolo Rossi 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles.
With the Blue Demons leading 3-0, No. 5 Luuk Wassenaar scored the match-clinching point with his 6-1, 6-2 decision over Javier Apellaniz.
Fran Tonejc made it 5-0 after defeating Alejandro Martinez 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4. Chris Casati prevailed over Nicola Wehrle 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles and Tripp Tuff closed it out with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Francesco Tacconi.
"Good start to the weekend as our guys played great doubles to take the momentum," said DePaul coach Matt Brothers. "There was great team energy.
"We got off to fast starts in all the singles matches and carried it through to get straight-set wins across the board."
An instant replay of that fast start would come in handy on Saturday when Brothers & Co. tackle a Northern Illinois team that walks into Lakeshore Sport & Fitness with a 10-0 record. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m.
