DePaul Tops Miami in Cardinal Classic Finale

Blue Demons wrap up three-day road stint with doubleheader at Bradley on Monday
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – DePaul softball recorded a 5-4 win over Miami (Ohio) on Sunday afternoon in the finale of the Cardinal Classic on the campus of University of Louisville.
Senior Kate Polucha shined for the Blue Demons. Polucha went four-for-four from behind the plate and tallied two RBI's, a home run and crossed the plate twice.
Angela Scalzitti started the production for the DePaul (6-6) offense right off the bat with a leadoff triple in the first inning. Kate Polucha homered to left field to score Scalzitti and put DePaul ahead 2-0 after one.
In the third inning, Polucha tallied a leadoff double to center before the Blue Demons drew four consecutive walks by Riley Pool, Gabby O'Riley, Pearl Barroso, and Grace Frazier to push two more runs across the plate and widen the lead to 4-0.
The fourth inning saw Maranda Gutierrez and Polucha reach base on singles to right and left, respectively. Gutierrez advanced home on a RedHawks error in the outfield to make the score 5-0 in favor of DePaul.
Miami (6-6) tacked on two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off of three hits and a DePaul error to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Before all was said and done, the RedHawks threatened once again in the fifth inning behind a two RBI triple to right center to narrow the DePaul advantage to one.
Tori Meyer surrendered one hit in the bottom of the seventh before retiring the next two Miami batters to clinch the win for DePaul.
Natalie Halvorson claimed her second win of the season in the circle in 4.1 innings of work. Meyer earned the save in 2.2 innings of relief.
DePaul will close out its three-day road stretch with a doubleheader at Bradley on Monday, March 8. The first game is set to begin on Noon with coverage on ESPN+.
