Marquette defeats DePaul, 2-0
CHICAGO– DePaul women's soccer was unable to mount a second-half rally against Marquette on Sunday afternoon at Wish Field, falling 2-0. The Golden Eagles (3-0-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) notched a pair of second half goals to claim the BIG EAST match in Lincoln Park.
DePaul (1-2-0, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) controlled the opening 45 minutes, out-shooting the Golden Eagles 7-2 in the first half. The Blue Demons held a large amount of possession in the attacking half, putting pressure on the Golden Eagle defense. However, the match remained scoreless at the break.
The Blue Demons' best scoring chance occurred when forward Kristin Boos rifled in a high shot in 58th minute that was glanced away by the Marquette goalkeeper and deflected off of the crossbar and out of danger. Boos fired a game-high five shots with two ending up on goal. As a team, the Blue Demons outshot Marquette 16-6. Six of the DePaul attempts ended up on target.
Marquette was able to break the scoreless tie early in the second half on a goal by Katrina Wetherell in the 46th minute. The Golden Eagles added to the lead in the 74th minute when a high cross was swung in and knocked home by Elsi Twombly.
Down a pair, the Blue Demons continued to push forward offensively but couldn't generate a goal with time winding down.
