DePaul holds off UConn 4-2 on Saturday afternoon
CHICAGO – The DePaul softball team extended its win streak to seven after completing the series sweep of Connecticut on Saturday afternoon with a 4-2 victory at Cacciatore Stadium.
The Blue Demons found themselves in a 1-0 hole after the top of the first, but manufactured four runs across innings two, three and four while limiting the Huskies chances to capture the victory.
Gabby O'Riley tallied a two-run homer while Angela Scalzitti blasted a solo shot of her own. Kate Polucha recorded an RBI on two hits in the contest.
The Huskies jumped out to an early lead behind three consecutive hits followed by a hit by pitch to push the runner across the plate.
DePaul (14-7, 6-0 BIG EAST) put two runs up in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 advantage thanks to O'Riley's third home run of the season to score Maranda Gutierrez.
The third inning saw Angela Scalzitti tally her first home run of the season with a leadoff shot to right to widen the advantage to 3-1.
Connecticut (13-13, 5-4 BIG EAST) inched closer in the fourth inning with a solo shot of their own to center field from catcher Devin Casazza to bring the score to 3-2 in favor of DePaul.
The Blue Demons added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning to push the advantage back to two. Grace Frazier slapped in a single before Skylor Hilger reached on a fielder's choice and Frazier advanced to second on a UConn throwing error. At the ensuing at bat, Scalzitti reached base on a fielder's choice to move the runners ahead, but Frazier was tagged at third for the second out of the frame. Polucha knocked in an infield single and Hilger advanced all the way at home while the Huskies second baseman attempted to make the play at first.
UConn went on to record a hit in each of the final three innings, but never threatened as DePaul senior Krista Dalgarn kept the Husky batters at bay.
Dalgarn improved to 8-1 on the season with the victory.
DePaul returns to Cacciatore Stadium on Wednesday, April 7 for a non-conference matchup with Northern Illinois. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m. CT.
