
DePaul Drops Opening Game of BIG EAST Championship

STORRS, Conn. – DePaul surrendered six runs in the sixth inning and could not recover in an 8-1 setback to Butler in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship.
Despite an early 1-0 lead, the Blue Demons gave up 10 hits and only recorded four on the outing.
DePaul (25-10) saw its nine-game win streak snapped and now awaits the loser of No. 2 Villanova/No. 3 UConn in tonight's consolation game.
Jessica Cothern got DePaul off to a good start in the bottom of the first inning with her sixth home run of the season to put the Blue Demons up 1-0.
Butler (17-19-1) responded in the top of the second with a home run of their own off the bat of catcher Grace Candotti to even the score at 1-1.
Skylor Hilger reached on an error before Gutierrez advanced her on a single into left. Both runners advanced on a passed ball, but couldn't be pushed across.
The Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead on a Karli Ricketts solo home run to right field in the top of the fourth inning. Krista Dalgarn entered the circle in relief and retired the next two batters to limit the damage.
In the top of the fifth, Buter threatened with a runner on second before Hilger gloved a single up the middle and caught the runner rounding third in a run down to earn the third out and end the inning.
Cothern sent a single to left field in the bottom of the fifth, but could not be advanced as the Blue Demons stranded their sixth runner of the contest.
Butler put two on base to leadoff the sixth inning before a sacrifice bunt advanced both runners into scoring position. The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs on successful bunts to widen the lead to 4-1 before Madi Christiansen sent a three-run homer to right field. A Lauren Fey RBI single saw the Butler lead balloon to 8-1. Halvorson re-entered the circle to secure the final out of the inning.
