Blue Demons use four-run fifth inning to win eighth in a row
CHICAGO – DePaul softball picked up its eighth win in a row in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against UIC with a 4-1 victory. The Blue Demons used a four-run fifth inning to overcome an early 1-0 deficit.
DePaul improved to 24-9 on the season and hold a 13-1 record in BIG EAST play. Five different Blue Demons tallied a hit with Angela Scalzitti recording an RBI single and Jessica Cothern blasting a three-run home run.
Krista Dalgarn threw a complete game and improved to 13-2 on the season in the circle with a total of two strikeouts.
UIC (26-19) jumped on the board in the top of the first behind a leadoff double from Kayla Wedl and an ensuing advance on a wild pitch. Wedl was brought home on an RBI single to left field from Maica Ingles to make it a 1-0 UIC advantage.
After being held scoreless in the previous four innings, DePaul broke through in the fifth putting up four runs. Pearl Barroso drew a leadoff walk before being replaced at first by pinch runner Erin Hocker. Grace Frazier laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Hocker to second. Angela Scalzitti drove a ball up the middle that ricocheted off the pitcher's glove and dropped into center field to score Hocker and tie the game. Kate Polucha drew her second walk of the day to push Scalzitti to second before Cothern launched a three-run homer over the center field wall to put DePaul in front 4-1.
The Flames threatened with two base runners on in the top of the 7th before three consecutive fly outs claimed the win for the Blue Demons.
The Flames and Blue Demons will meet for game two of the twin bill this afternoon before traveling to Storrs, Conn. for the BIG EAST Tournament, May 13-15.
