
Blue Demons Held off by Red Storm

DePaul outshoots St. John's 17-7 but held scoreless
QUEENS, N.Y. - DePaul women's soccer was held scoreless in Queens, N.Y. in a 1-0 loss versus St. John's on Sunday afternoon. After a first-half Red Storm goal, the Blue Demons tried to mount an offensive rally in the second half but St. John's was able to hold off the surge to claim the BIG EAST win.
St. John's was able to gain an early advantage on a goal by Ava Collins in the sixth minute. The goal came on a high strike by Collins from the top of the box. The goal came on one of the four shots the Red Storm fired off in the half. Meanwhile, the Blue Demons were able to tally six first-half shots but Red Storm goalkeeper Naya Lipkens made five saves.
In the second half, the Blue Demons continued the offensive effort. In the 60th minute, Olivia Cooke sent a low shot on target that was deflected away by Lipkens. Katie Godden made an attempt on the rebound but the ball was corralled and the Blue Demons were denied. Minutes later, Grace Phillpotts fired in a high cross that was found by Brooke Weitzel in the box. Weitzel's header from a dangerous location was deflected away and the Blue Demons were denied on the ensuing corner kick.
In the 72nd minute, the Blue Demons lined up a free kick from just outside the box. The attempt for the Blue Demons was blocked and the scramble for the deflected ball ended with Lipkens shutting down the DePaul chance. Minutes later on the other end, Mollie Eriksson charged for a ball on the St. John's attack and a long shot on goal deflected off of the goalpost. The missed chance for the Red Storm kept the score 1-0.
With time winding down, the Blue Demons find their best scoring opportunity. Beth Smyth found a through ball that had been threaded behind the defense but her shot inside the box was saved by Lipkens. The St. John's keeper made a total of 12 saves and the Red Storm held on to claim the BIG EAST victory.
