Blue Demons held to four shots in 2-0 setback
WASHINGTON, D.C. - After facing a 1-0 deficit within the first minute of action, DePaul women's soccer couldn't mount a response in a 2-0 setback to No. 23 Georgetown on Thursday afternoon at Shaw Field.
Georgetown (6-0-5, 2-0-1 BIG EAST) came out of the gates aggressive and netted a goal in the opening minute after a DePaul (3-7, 0-2) turnover allowed for a counterattack from the right side. A Gia Vicari service into the box found the foot of Cyanna Doyle to put the ball in the back of the net and give the Hoyas an early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Demons generated just two shots in the first half with one on frame off the boot of Senior Ebba Costow from five yards outside of the box.
In the 49th minute, DePaul goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson and the Blue Demon back line staved off four Georgetown opportunities to maintain a 1-0 deficit.
DePaul continued to press looking for offensive opportunities before freshman Katie Godden fired a shot right in front of the goal in the 76th minute but was turned away by GU keeper Allie Augur. Three minutes later, the Hoyas added an insurance goal off a set piece initiated on a corner kick. After taking a few bounces around in the congested box, Jenna Royson put the ball past the outstretched arms of Eriksson to give the Hoyas a 2-0 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the match.
With time winding down, freshman Susie Soderstrom fired off her second shot of the match but couldn't connect from the left side.
