
St. John's Holds Off DePaul

Blue Demons place four players in double figures but fall by score of 89-84 on Wednesday night
QUEENS, N.Y. – DePaul put four players in double figures, but came up on the short side of an 89-84 score at St. John's on Wednesday night. Javon Freeman-Liberty led the Blue Demons with 24 points while Jalen Terry added 14 off the bench.
The first half went back and forth before St. John's scored nine straight points. The flurry turned a two-point lead into an 11-point advantage as the Red Storm led 32-21 with five minutes left in the first half.
The two teams traded scores on their next possessions before DePaul (9-4, 0-3 BIG EAST) closed the opening frame by scoring nine of the game's next 12 points. Javan Johnson drilled a three-pointer from the corner to bring the Blue Demons to within two before the Red Storm's Posh Alexander beat the halftime buzzer with a driving layup and held a 39-35 lead at intermission.
The BIG EAST's top two scorers didn't disappoint in the first half as Freeman-Liberty scored 11 points and Julian Champagnie had 13 for St. John's.
St. John's jumped ahead by eight early in the second half before a dunk by David Jones and five straight points from Terry brought the Blue Demons back once again.
Freeman-Liberty sliced through the land with a one-handed dunk to give DePaul (9-4, 0-3 BIG EAST) a 54-53 lead with just under 14 minutes left in the game. It was DePaul's first lead since holding a 4-2 advantage in the first minute of the game.
Brandon Johnson followed on DePaul's next possession with a three-pointer from the right corner that saw St. John's score on the other end before a driving layup by Jones preceded a Johnson free throw. Johnson's free throw pushed the Blue Demon lead to 60-55 with 11:50 on the clock.
The Red Storm answered with a 10-3 run over the next two minutes that ended with the home team holding a two-point advantage.
The teams traded baskets over the next two minutes before Champagnie scored 11 straight points for St. John's that saw just a three-pointer from Freeman-Liberty for DePaul. On his final free throw, the Red Storm held an 82-74 advantage with 2:30 left in the game.
DePaul put together one final push and trailed by three with a minute left before St. John's (9-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) scored five of the game's last eight points for an 89-84 final score.
Freeman-Liberty added seven rebounds while Terry grabbed eight boards and dished out six assists. Brandon Johnson added 13 points and seven rebounds followed by Jones with 11 points, seven boards and four assists. Javan Johnson scored nine points with three rebounds.
Champagnie led St. John's and all scorers with 34 points and 16 rebounds.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Saturday to face No. 19/15 Villanova. Start time is 1 p.m. on FS1 and WIND (560 AM).
