
Freeman-Liberty's Career Game Not Enough in Loss to #19/15 Villanova

Javon Freeman-Liberty scored a career-high 34 points on Saturday afternoon at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – Javon Freeman-Liberty scored a career-high 34 points, but a 15-2 run for Villanova to start the second half led the visiting Wildcats to a 79-64 decision over the Blue Demons. David Jones added 12 points and Brandon Johnson grabbed 10 rebounds for DePaul.
A pair of three-pointers by Freeman-Liberty and layups from Jones and Jalen Terry gave the Blue Demons an early 10-4 advantage. No. 19/15 Villanova answered with five straight points and the remainder of the first half went back-and-forth as the Wildcats took a 23-19 at the seven-minute mark.
DePaul (9-5, 0-4 BIG EAST) closed the opening frame with a flurry and took a 37-32 lead at intermission. The Blue Demons turned a four-point deficit with four minutes left into a six-point lead with a 10-0 run in just over two minutes. Four different players scored during the run that ended with a Yor Ani bucket and DePaul holding a 34-28 lead with 1:53 on the clock.
Freeman-Liberty led the way in the first half with 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
Villanova (11-4, 4-1 BIG EAST) held DePaul scoreless over the first three minutes of the second half and turned the seven-point deficit at halftime into a three-point lead. Philmon Gebrewhit ended the run with a pull-up jumper to make the score 40-39 in favor of the visitors.
The Wildcats pushed the lead up to double figures on a three-pointer that made the score 53-43 with 12:45 on the clock before Jones and Johnson connected on four straight free throws.
Villanova's lead grew as high as 16 points in the final minute before settling at the 79-64 final score.
Freeman-Liberty added six rebounds and three steals while Johnson scored eight points to go along with his 10 rebounds.
Collin Gillespie led Villanova with 28 points while Justin Moore scored 21 points.
DePaul goes on the road Tuesday at Marquette for the 130th meeting between the programs. The 6 p.m. game will be televised on FS1 in an all-access format and can be heard on WIND (560 AM).
