DePaul Overpowers Iowa 13-0 in First Game of Torero Classic

Johnson drives home four runs in offensive explosion for the Blue Demons
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — DePaul softball came out swinging and never looked back in a 13-0 (five inn.) win over Iowa on Friday night on the campus of University of San Diego.
Four Blue Demons tallied a multi-hit game including Brooke Johnson who led the way with six RBIs including a grand slam in an eight-run fifth inning. Skylor Hilger drove home a pair of runs while Grace Frazier, Kate Polucha, Tori Meyer and Maranda Gutierrez plated one run apiece.
Natalie Halvorson allowed just three hits in the circle while moving to 2-0 on the season. The right-hander allowed just four base runners in five innings of play.
The Blue Demons jumped on the board in the first as Guiterrez singled and Sullivan drew a walk to set the table. Meyer knocked a single to right field to plate Sullivan and put DePaul in front 1-0.
DePaul added on in the third inning after Hilger knocked a leadoff double down the left field line and was brought home on a Johnson single up the middle.
The fourth inning saw Meyer tally a leadoff double and plated by a Grace Frazier RBI single to push the score to 3-0. Riley Pool drew a walk and advanced to second on the ensuing putout to put runners in scoring position. Frazier came home on a wild pitch while Polucha knocked in a two-out RBI single to score Pool and put the Blue Demons in front 5-0.
The scoring erupted in the fifth inning as DePaul put up an eight spot to widen the advantage to 13-0. Johnson started the scoring with a leadoff solo shot to left center. Anna Wohlers walked before Frazier reached on an error and Pool drew a walk to load the bases. Hilger tapped a single through the right side to plate Frazier and Wohlers to make the score 8-0. In the next at bat, Polucha singled to load the bases again before Gutierrez took a base on a hit by pitch to plate Pool. In her second at bat of the inning, Johnson blasted a grand slam to center field and put DePaul in front 13-0.
DePaul will wrap up the first day at the Torero Classic with a matchup against San Diego at 9 p.m. CT on Friday evening.
