Comeback Bid Falls Short For DePaul Against South Dakota State

Blue Demons drop weekend finale 5-3
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — DePaul softball could not complete the comeback attempt against South Dakota State on Saturday afternoon, falling 5-3, in the final game of the Torero Classic.
DePaul, trailing 5-0 after five innings, scored three runs in the final two innings but could not produce enough offense to knot the score or take the lead.
The Jackrabbits saw success in the third inning scoring three runs on a pair of hits including a two-RBI triple to right center and SAC Fly to center.
South Dakota State (5-3) added one run apiece in the fourth and fifth to extend their lead to 5-0.
DePaul (5-3) got on the board in the top of the sixth on an RBI single to left field to score Maranda Gutierrez. Gutierrez drew a leadoff walk and was advanced on a SAC bunt from Skylor Hilger and a fly out to right from Johnson.
In the seventh inning, the first two batters jumped aboard with Tori Meyer singling to third and Riley Pool sending a single to right to put runners on the corners. Freshman Baylee Cosgrove tallied the first hit of her career at the right time with a single to left center to push Meyer across the plate and bring DePaul within three. Addison Talbot, running for Pool, scored on a wild pitch to bring the Blue Demons within two, 5-3. A Gutierrez fly out and relay home would end the comeback bid for DePaul.
Erin Hocker dropped to 1-1 on the season in the circle.
DePaul will head south Feb. 25-27 for the Knights Classic in Orlando, Fla. The Blue Demons are set to meet Oakland, Florida, Central Florida and Ole Miss over a span of five games.
