DePaul Closes Out Weekend with 3-1 Loss to Ole Miss

ORLANDO, Fla. — DePaul softball closed out its weekend in Orlando with a 3-1 loss to Ole Miss on Sunday morning in the Knights Classic finale.
The Blue Demons totaled eight hits and drew three walks, but could not manufacture scores as nine runners were left on base in the setback.
DePaul (5-8) took an early 1-0 lead in the second on a two-out RBI double from freshman Baylee Cosgrove to score Anna Wohlers from first.
Ole Miss (11-4) responded with a run of their own in the fourth and the Rebels took the lead in the top of the fifth on a trio fo hits including a pair of doubles to center field.
In the bottom of the sixth, Maranda Gutierrez drew a walk before Brooke Johnson and Nicole Sullivan reached on a pair of singles. Sullivan's base hit to left field advanced Gutierrez to third before being thrown out at home to end the inning
The top of the seventh saw Ole Miss add an insurance run as the leadoff walk came around to score on a groundout to short.
DePaul saw a great opportunity in the bottom of the seventh but could not capitalize. Cosgrove reached on an error before Gutierrez drew a walk and Skylor Hilger singled to shortstop to load the bases. The ensuing batters struck out swinging to end the inning and the game.
Senior pitcher Natalie Halvorson pitched a complete game, striking out seven while allowing nine hits and a pair of runs.
DePaul will hit the road next weekend for the OSU/Tulsa Invitational March 4-6. The Blue Demons will meet Tulsa, Oklahoma State, Stanford and Minnesota for five games in three days.
