Blue Demons turn up the offense in game one win
TULSA, Okla. — DePaul saw production from every position in the lineup on Friday afternoon to power past Tulsa 9-1 in six innings in the weekend opener at the Tulsa/Oklahoma State Invitational. Senior pitcher Natalie Halvorson surrendered just four hits and a single run in the win.
Maranda Gutierrez tallied four hits in the victory while Brooke Johnson, Kate Polucha and Anna Wohlers all notched multi-hit games.
DePaul saw a run hung early in the matchup with Johnson driving Gutierrez home on an RBI single to give DePaul a 1-0 lead after 1.
The Blue Demons added on in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead. Grace Frazier drew a leadoff walk before Wohlers advanced her on a double to put a pair of runners in scoring position. At the turn of the lineup, Gutierrez knocked a single down the third base line to plate Frazier and advance Wohlers. A sacrifice bunt from Skylor Hilger pushed Wohlers across before Johnson plated Gutierrez on her second RBI single in as many innings.
In the third inning, DePaul (6-8) stretched the lead to 5-0 on a Polucha solo home run to left field, her first long ball of the season.
Tulsa (5-9) put a run on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning as the runner was ruled safe at home on a groundout to third.
A bases-loaded walk drawn by Nicole Sullivan extended the Blue Demons lead to 6-1. An RBI single to right field from Polucha pushed Johnson and Meyer across the plate while Sullivan advanced to third and DePaul extended their lead to 8-1. Sullivan scored the third run of the inning on a Frazier sacrifice to put the Blue Demons ahead by eight runs.
Halvorson improved to 3-2 on the season after her six innings of work.
The Blue Demons will turn around for game two of Friday's doubleheader against Tulsa in approximately 30 minutes time.
