DePaul Uses Offensive Explosion to Power Past Montana

Blue Demons total season-high 15 hits in game one victory
MISSOULA, Mont. — DePaul put up a season-high 15 hits in an 11-7 win over Montana in game one of Friday afternoon's doubleheader at the Montana Invitational.
Five Blue Demons tallied multi-hit games including Tori Meyer and Skylor Hilger with three apiece. Freshman Anna Wohlers totaled two hits, two RBI and scored two runs while hitting the first home run of her career. Brooke Johnson drove in three runs on her team-leading fifth home run of the season.
Montana (10-11) took a 1-0 lead after the first inning after a DePaul error and a RBI double.
Anna Wohlers responded with a solo home run to right field to knot the score at 1-1. Friday marked the first homer of her career and fifth RBI on the season.
The Grizzlies responded with a trio of runs on three hits and a DePaul error to take a 4-1 lead after two innings.
DePaul (8-11) responded with two runs in the top of the fourth to come within a run, trailing 4-3. Tori Meyer ripped a leadoff single through the left side and advanced to second on a Sullivan ground out. Wohlers took a base before a Riley Pool RBI-single up the middle scored Meyer. At the next at bat, Zoie Rettig plated Wohlers on a RBI double to the left field fence.
The top of the fifth saw DePaul score four runs on four hits to take a commanding 7-4 lead. Skylor Hilger tapped a leadoff single to third base before stealing second. Brooke Johnson drew a walk to put runners on first and second for a Meyer RBI single to center to plate Hilger. Sullivan sent a single to left field to score Johnson before a double steal sent Meyer home to make the score 6-4. At the next at bat, Wohlers doubled down the right field line to push Sullivan across and tally her second RBI on the day.
Montana added a run on a double and ensuing sacrifice fly to center to come within two at 7-5.
Johnson came home from third on a wild pitch in the sixth inning to push the DePaul lead to 8-5. In the bottom of the sixth saw a Grizzlies leadoff walk followed by a home run off the left field foul pole to bring Montana within one, 8-7.
In the seventh, the Blue Demons were looking to add insurance runs and they did just that. Gutierrez and Hilger reached base on base hits before Johnson blasted a home run to center field to extend the lead to 11-7.
Montana loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and added a run on a wild pitch before Lehman retired the final batter to secure the win.
Sarah Lehman threw four innings, allowed four runs and struck out two while improving to 4-4 in the circle with the victory.
DePaul and Montana will face off in game two of the doubleheader at approximately 3 p.m. CT.
