DePaul Drops Narrow Contest With Minnesota

Blue Demons to meet Stanford in game two
TULSA, Okla. — DePaul dropped its first contest of a two-game Saturday with a narrow 7-6 defeat to Minnesota on day two of the TU/OSU Invitational.
DePaul (6-10) fell behind early after Minnesota sent a leadoff double to left center which turned into a two RBI homer to make it a 2-0 lead. The Gophers added a run to on a Blue Demons error to make it 3-0 after the first.
The Blue Demons took the lead with five runs in the top of the third inning. Zoie Rettig, in her first start as a Blue Demon, took a homer to left field to start the scoring onslaught. Maranda Gutierrez reached base on a walk before Skylor Hilger and Brooke Johnson singled to load the bases. Nicole Sullivan swung on the first pitch of her at bat and sent a homer to left center to clear the bases and put DePaul in front 5-3.
Minnesota (10-6) got a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a solo shot to left field.
The top of the fourth inning saw the Blue Demons get a run back after Anna Wohlers drew a leadoff walk and was advanced on a pair of fielders choice plays. A Gutierrez sacrifice fly to right scored Wohlers in the put DePaul back in front 6-4.
The Gophers responded with a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-RBI double to right center. Halvorson entered the circle in relief and produced two outs to leave the bases loaded and end the inning.
Minnesota won the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out double that led to a RBI single to give the Gophers a 7-6 advantage.
DePaul will turn around and face Stanford on Saturday afternoon to close out day two at the Tulsa/Oklahoma State Invitational.
