Brooke Johnson's RBI single in the ninth inning pushes DePaul past Cardinal
TULSA, Okla. — DePaul bounced back in a big way on Saturday afternoon with a 6-5 win over Stanford in nine innings.
Maranda Gutierrez, Brooke Johnson and Anna Wohlers tallied two hits apiece with Gutierrez and Johnson responsible for two RBI apiece.
The Blue Demons took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Johnson RBI double down the left field line to score Skylor Hilger who had reached on an error in the previous at bat.
Stanford (16-4) responded with three hits and two runs in the second to take a 2-1 lead before DePaul answered right back with two runs, two hits and two Cardinal errors to reclaim a 3-2 lead after two innings.
The Cardinal answered right back on a two-run homer in the top of the third inning to pull ahead 4-3
DePaul (7-10) tied up the contest in the fourth as Zoie Rettig reached base in the leadoff position on a Stanford error before being advanced to third on a Riley Pool sacrifice bunt. At the top of the order, Gutierrez sent a triple town the left field line to plate Rettig and knot the score at four.
The fifth, sixth and seventh innings were scoreless for both squads to send the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth, Stanford pulled ahead 5-4 on an RBI single to score the runner placed on second. In the bottom half of the frame, Nicole Sullivan ran at second and was advanced to third on a Wohlers ground out to third.
