Blue Demons Sweep Pirates with 4-1 Win on Sunday

Cosgrove's three-run homer lifts DePaul to key BIG EAST sweep
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — DePaul completed the three-game sweep of Seton Hall on Sunday afternoon with a 4-1 victory to pull within a game of .500 on the season and move to 6-6 in BIG EAST action.Â
A three-run home run from freshman Baylee Cosgrove in the top of the fifth inning proved to be the difference as the Loda, Ill. native crushed her fourth long ball of the season before Anna Wohlers added a tally with an RBI-double to score Maranda Gutierrez.Â
Sarah Lehman continued her tear in the circle with a complete-game victory allowing four hits and zero earned runs while striking out nine batters. The graduate right-hander struck out a total of 19 on the weekend in 15 innings of work while picking up a pair of victories and a save.Â
The top of the fifth inning saw Nicole Sullivan reach on a base hit up the middle before Riley Pool took first base on a fielding error by the Pirates pitcher. The runners advanced to scoring position on a wild pitch before Cosgrove sent a ball out of the park for the fourth time this season to put the Blue Demons in front 3-0. Gutierrez and Johnson were both hit by a pitch to take occupy second and first before Wohlers ripped a double to deep right field to bring Gutierrez around and push the advantage to 4-0.
The Pirates threatened in the bottom of the fifth with an unearned run crossing on a Blue Demons fielding error before a pair of walks loaded the bases. A diving grab from Gutierrez turned to Hilger at second ended the inning and kept Seton Hall (14-16, 4-8)Â from pulling closer.Â
A Seton Hall one-out triple to left center in the sixth inning threatened before Lehman slammed the door and ended the inning unscathed. It took just 12 pitches for Lehman in the bottom of the seventh to chop down the Pirates and claim the victory.Â
DePaul faces a quick turnaround with a midweek matchup scheduled for Tuesday, April 12 against Illinois State. The Blue Demons and Redbirds will square off at Cacciatore Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. Tuesday's contest serves as Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day.Â
