Blue Demons claim sixth-straight BIG EAST victory in front of national TV audience
CHICAGO — DePaul won its sixth-straight BIG EAST game on Saturday afternoon with an 11-8 comeback victory over St. John's in front of a national television audience on CBS Sports Network. Despite an early deficit, the Blue Demons picked up their second conference sweep of the season and won their fifth in a row in the series against the Red Storm.
The offense was once again well-balanced with Tori Meyer leading the way with a four-for-four day including a home run, a trio of base hits and three runs scored. Anna Wohlers stayed hot with a three-for-four performance including a solo home run, her third long ball of the series, along with an RBI-single. Nicole Sullivan tallied a multi-hit outing with two hits and two runs driven in while Kate Polucha drove in three runs with one swing of the bat with a triple off the right field fence.
Julyana Gomez picked up her first win of the season in the circle. The sophomore right-hander game up a pair of runs on two hits in her sixth appearance of the season.
DePaul (20-19, 9-6 BIG EAST) dug itself into a deep hole, trailing 5-0 after an inning and a half before roaring back with nine unanswered runs to take command of the game.
Wohlers smashed her sixth home run of the season to right field to put the Blue Demons on the board in the bottom of the second inning.
St. John's (10-30, 4-14) pushed the lead back to five with a sacrifice fly to left field in the top of the third before the Blue Demons unfurled five runs on four hits to tie the score 6-6. Maranda Gutierrez drew a leadoff walk, Hilger sent a single to left field before Wohlers loaded the bases on a walk. Polucha's triple off the right field fence cleared the bases to pull DePaul within two before Meyer singled and Sullivan singled to score the runners and tie the game.
The offensive onslaught continued with four more runs to take the lead in the fifth inning. Meyer singled and stole second before Sullivan singled. Sullivan moved up 60 feet before Carly Alvers sent a pinch-hit two-RBI double to left field to give the Blue Demons their first lead of the day. Gutierrez followed up with a two-RBI single through the left side and Wohlers continued her hot streak with an RBI-single of her own to put DePaul in front 10-6.
The Red Storm scored a pair of runs on a pair of hits in the sixth inning but DePaul wasn't done yet as Meyer tallied her ninth hit of the series in 10 at bats with a line drive home run to right field to put the Blue Demons in front 11-8.
The game ended in the bottom of the sixth inning just after 4 p.m. as St. John's travel schedule required departure for the airport before the contest reached a seventh inning.
DePaul will return to action on Wednesday, April 20 with a trip to Northern Illinois. First pitch from DeKalb is scheduled for 3 p.m. The Blue Demons will return home for the final weekend series of the season April 22-24 when the Georgetown Hoyas visit Cacciatore Stadium.
