Blue Demons win seventh-straight game, ninth consecutive BIG EAST contest
CHICAGO — DePaul reeled off 12 runs in the first inning en route to its ninth-straight BIG EAST victory with a 13-9 decision over Georgetown on Sunday afternoon. A rainy day in Lincoln Park did not put a damper on the Blue Demon bats as DePaul claimed the series sweep to improve to 12-6 in BIG EAST play and 24-19 overall.
Senior outfielder Kate Polucha had quite the outing with a pair of home runs on a pair of at bats in the first inning to drive in three runs. Brooke Johnson continued her tear at the plate with a pair of hits and four RBI including a three-run home run to mark her 13th long ball of the season. Anna Wohlers plated a pair of runs on her team-best third triple of the season.
In the circle, Sarah Lehman got the start and threw just an inning allowing a run on a pair of hits before Julyana Gomez went for six innings allowing eight runs on 11 hits. Gomez moved to 2-2 on the season.
Much like the series opener, Georgetown jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the first inning but that was no match for the 12-run bottom frame from the Blue Demons. The first 10 batters in the inning reached before a near 40 minute rain delay halted play with the Blue Demons in front 7-1 and the bases loaded with no outs. After the pause in play, DePaul added on with five more runs including homers from Johnson and Polucha.
An RBI-double from Baylee Cosgrove in the bottom of the second inning scored Carly Alvers to push the advantage to 13-1.
Georgetown (13-25, 3-13) put up a combined eight runs in the fifth and seventh innings including a trio of two-out solo home runs in the final inning, but it wasn't enough as the Blue Demons came away with the victory.
The Blue Demons return to action on Wednesday with a non-conference match up with Illinois at Cacciatore Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. with coverage on FloSoftball.
