Meyer's two-run homer sparks offense as Blue Demons claim 10th BIG EAST victory in a row
OMAHA, Neb. — A combined seven runs over the final two innings lifted DePaul over Creighton, 9-4, on Friday afternoon in the series opener at the Creighton Sports Complex. The Blue Demons claimed their 10th BIG EAST victory in a row and moved into third place in the conference standings.
Tori Meyer's fifth home run of the season sparked a five-run onslaught in the sixth inning while Riley Pool drove in a pair of runs in the top of the seventh inning to add insurance. Freshman Anna Wohlers drove in a trio of runs on a sacrifice fly and an infield single. In the circle, Sarah Lehman went the distance to improve to 11-5 on the season after surrendering eight hits and four earned runs while striking out six batters.
The Bluejays jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning on a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center field.
DePaul (25-20, 13-6 BIG EAST) answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Gutierrez drew a walk before Hilger reached on a throwing error. The Blue Demons loaded the bases after Johnson was intentionally walked. Wohlers evened the score with a sacrifice fly to deep left center before Polucha reached first on another Creighton throwing error which brought Hilger home from third to give the Blue Demons a 2-1 lead.
Creighton (14-26, 4-16) tied the game on their second bases-loaded sacrifice in the bottom of the third and took a 3-2 lead on an RBI-single to right field in the bottom of the fourth.
The Blue Demons were scoreless through the fourth and fifth before a two-run sixth inning gave DePaul a 4-3 lead. Polucha ripped a leadoff-double to the wall before Meyer brought her home on a deep shot over the left field wall for her fifth homer of the season. Pool reached on a fielding error at third base before Alvers walked and Gutierrez sent a single to shallow left field to load the bases. Hilger grounded out to third base to score Pool before Johnson was intentionally walked for the second time to re-load the bases. Anna Wohlers sent an infield single to second base to bring Grace Frazier and Gutierrez across.
The top of the seventh inning saw Meyer and Sullivan reach on consecutive walks before Pool sent a double to right center to push the score to 9-3.
The Bluejays added a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally stopped there as Lehman clamped down and induced the third out of the inning.
The two teams will meet for the second game in the series on Saturday with first pitch from Creighton Sports Complex set for 1 p.m. The series finale on Sunday is set to get underway at Noon. Both contests can be seen live on FloSoftball.
