Gutierrez, Meyer and Wohlers drive in three runs apiece in the victory
CHICAGO — After trailing by four runs after the first inning, DePaul scored 12 unanswered runs to take down UIC 16-6 in six innings on Wednesday afternoon at Flames Field.
Tori Meyer and Anna Wohlers went 3-for-4 from behind the plate while driving in a trio of runs apiece to lead the Blue Demons. Maranda Gutierrez drove in three-runs on the afternoon including a two-run home run to right field in the third inning.
Graduate pitcher Sarah Lehman picked up her sixth win of the season in the circle, throwing 4.0 innings, allowing a pair of earned runs on three hits while striking out five batters.
UIC (6-20) took an early advantage with a four-spot in the bottom of the first inning on a RBI-triple to center field followed up with a three-run home run to left center.
The Blue Demons clawed back with a two-run home run from Gutierrez to score Baylee Cosgrove who drew a leadoff walk. Gutierrez sent her second home run of the season to right field to trim the deficit to 4-2.
The explosive 10-run fourth inning rally saw 14 Blue Demon at bats to amount to a 12-4 advantage. Wohlers got things started with a base hit up the middle and advanced on an error before scoring on a Nicole Sullivan double down the left field line. Meyer pushed Sullivan across with a double to left center to knot the score at four apiece. Baylee Cosgrove drew a walk before a double steal scored Meyer and the Blue Demons led for the first time in the afternoon. Freshman Carly Alvers scored Cosgrove on an RBI-single to left field to make it 6-4.
DePaul (14-18) went on to score six more runs with two outs in the inning on a bases-loaded walk from Johnson, Wohlers two-RBI single, a UIC fielding error and a Meyer two-RBI double.
The fifth inning saw the Blue Demons add another run to go up 13-4 after an Alvers leadoff double to center field came around to score on an Addison Talbot RBI-single
The Flames extended the contest with a pair of runs on three hits in the fifth inning cutting into the deficit 13-6 before the Blue Demons poured on three more runs on a hit, pair of walks and a UIC error to take a 16-6 lead in the sixth inning to put the game out of reach.
