
Blue Demons Take Down Providence 5-1 in Game One

Cosgrove and Alvers combine for four RBI to hand DePaul series-opening win
PROVIDENCE, R.I. — DePaul opened up its final regular season series of the 2022 campaign with a 5-1 win at Providence on Friday afternoon at Glay Field. Freshmen Baylee Cosgrove and Carly Alvers drove in a pair of runs apiece while junior Tori Meyer added an insurance run in the fifth inning as the Blue Demons moved to 27-21 on the season and 15-7 in BIG EAST play.
Cosgrove and Alvers provided the offense in the eight and nine spots with both batters going 2-for-3 on the outing with a pair of RBI. Kate Polucha went 2-for-2 on the day with a walk to boot while scoring a pair of runs.
Sarah Lehman went the complete game in the circle surrendering just a pair of base hits and an earned run to improve to 13-5 on the season and 8-1 in league play. Lehman recorded six punch outs and threw four walks on the afternoon.
Providence took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as the first four Friar batters reached on a base hit, walk, hit by pitch and a walk before Lehman retired the next three batters to end the inning and limit the early damage.
The Blue Demons responded with a run in the second inning to knot the score at 1-1. Polucha drew a one-out walk and Tori Meyer reached on an error before Baylee Cosgrove sent a double through the left side to bring Polucha around.
DePaul added three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Polucha reached for the second time up on a base hit through the left side before advancing to second on a Meyer ground out. Sullivan drew a walk to put a pair of runners on for Cosgrove who brought Polucha home for the second time on the afternoon with a base hit through the left side to give DePaul a 2-1 advantage. With runners in scoring position, Alvers sent a two-RBI single through the left side to push Sullivan and Cosgrove across for a three-run lead.
Meyer added an insurance run in the seventh inning with an RBI-double to right field to bring pinch runner Grace Frazier around after Polucha drew a walk.
The two squads will meet for game two of Friday's doubleheader at approximately 3:30 p.m. CT
