PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A five-run fifth inning proved to be too much for DePaul in a 8-4 setback to Providence in game two of Friday's doubleheader at Glay Field.
The lead changed hands on three occasions before the Friars took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth inning. Brooke Johnson, Nicole Sullivan and Baylee Cosgrove were responsible for the Blue Demon runs as Johnson lifted a sacrifice fly while Sullivan and Cosgrove sent home runs out of the yard.
DePaul (27-22, 15-8) took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Skylor Hilger reached on an infield base hit and advanced to third on a stolen base and a throwing error from the Providence catcher. Johnson lifted a ball to center field to bring Hilger across on the sacrifice fly.
Providence (25-20, 11-12) evened the score in the bottom half of the inning on a leadoff base hit that came around to score on an RBI-single up the middle.
The Friars took a 3-1 lead in the third inning after a pair of walks and an infield base hit set the table for an RBI-double to left center to bring around two runs.
DePaul knocked back-to-back home runs to take a 4-3 lead in the third inning. Tori Meyer reached on a leadoff bunt before Sullivan lined a ball over the center field wall to tie the game. In the next at bat, Cosgrove lifted it over the left field wall to hand DePaul a one-run advantage.
The Friars responded with back-to-back home runs to retake a 5-4 advantage before Julyana Gomez entered the circle in relief of Hocker. Consecutive walks followed by three base drove in three more runs to extend the Providence lead to 8-4.
The Blue Demons saw chances in the sixth inning with a Brooke Johnson leadoff base hit followed by an Anna Wohlers walk, but a fielder's choice and a double play ended the inning with nothing crossing. Looking for a rally in the seventh, DePaul went down in order.
Providence and DePaul will meet for the series finale on Sunday, May 8 with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
