Timely offense, stout pitching from Smith allows DePaul to remain unscathed on opening weekend
ROSEMONT, Ill. – For the second-consecutive day, DePaul saved the fireworks for late in the game as the Blue Demons closed out opening weekend with a 2-1 win over Evansville in eight innings to move to 4-0 on the season.
Â
The bats were quieted on both sides as the Evansville notched three hits in the first five innings while the Blue Demons first strike came on a two-out infield base hit from Grace Frazier in the fifth.
Â
Brenna Smith, making her first start in the circle for the Blue Demons, retired nine-consecutive batters heading into extra innings and allowed a lone run on a sac fly in the eighth before slamming the door on the Aces.
Â
Frazier carded a 2-for-3 outing with a pair of base hits while scoring the game-winning run on the Evansville error. Junior designated player Carly Alvers came up clutch with an RBI-single through the left side to provide the tying run.
Â
Brooke Johnson was the lone other Blue Demon to reach base with a walk in the fourth inning.
Â
How It Happened
Evansville (4-1) used a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly to push a run across in the top of the eighth before Smith induced a fly out to left to halt any further damage.
Â
In the bottom half of the frame, Gracie Jacobs was placed on second and Frazier advanced the freshman to third in a well-executed bunt to put runners on the corners. Alvers put the Blue Demons on the board, knotting the score at 1-1, with Jacobs crossing the plate on an RBI-single. Addison Talbot came to the dish looking for the go ahead run and found just that, reaching on a fielder's choice as Frazier rounded third and scored on an Evansville error to clinch the one-run victory for DePaul.
