Blue Demons fall to Weber State, Grand Canyon on Friday
PHOENIX, Ariz. – The DePaul bats took some time to wake up on Friday afternoon as the Blue Demons dropped two games on day one of the Littlewood Classic. In the weekend opener, DePaul fell to Weber State 7-3 before dropping a 7-1 decision to Grand Canyon later in the afternoon. DePaul (4-2) was slow to get the offense rolling, with three of their four combined runs on the day coming in the seventh inning.
Â
However, the Blue Demons saw success with the long ball as Brooke Johnson, Anna Wohlers and Nicole Sullivan all went yard with solo home runs. Alexis Houge tallied a double, the first hit of her career, while Addison Talbot, Tori Meyer and Grace Frazier all added base knocks between the two games.
Â
All four pitchers saw innings, with Brenna Smith earning the start against Weber State and Bella Nigey against Grand Canyon. Smith threw 4.1 innings against the Wildcats, allowing five earning runs on seven hits while earning two strikeouts. Abbey Pochie saw a relief appearance, going 2.2 innings and surrendering a pair of runs on five hits. Nigey tossed three and a third against the Lopes, conceding seven runs before making way for Katey Pierce who retired six of nine batters faced with one walk and one hit.
Â
Game 1 – Weber State 7, DePaul 3
The early goings of the matchup had the makings of a pitcher's duel with the squads combining for three hits through the first three innings. Johnson put the Blue Demons on the board first with a second-pitch solo-home run to secure the 1-0 DePaul lead. The Wildcats responded in a big way with a four-hit, six-run fifth inning to take a commanding 6-1 advantage. The fifth and sixth were quiet for DePaul while Weber added an insurance run. A seventh inning rally fell short as Wohlers sent a leadoff home run to right field and Houge followed up with a double and later scored on a Frazier RBI-single, but it was too little too late as WSU secured the victory.
Â
Game 2 – Grand Canyon 7, DePaul 1
The Lopes used a two-hit, two-run first inning to take an early advantage while adding on a pair more in the third to jump out to a 4-0 lead. A three-run fourth for GCU proved to put the game out of reach, as the Blue Demons scored one run in the top of the seventh on a Sullivan solo shot.
