DePaul Falls in Double Overtime

CHICAGO – In a toe-to-toe matchup, the DePaul men's basketball team ultimately fell, 92-83, in double overtime game Tuesday night against St. John's. DePaul (9-17, 3-12 BIG EAST) was led by Javan Johnson with a game-high 26 points and his personal-best six three-pointers.
A hefty amount of DePaul's scoring game from four players, including Johnson and 17 points from Umoja Gibson. Da'Sean Nelson added 15 and eight rebounds while Nick Ongenda rounded out the double-digit performances with 11 points. Ongenda made his season debut after missing a large portion of the season due to injury.
HOW IT HAPPENED
DePaul came out strong to a 20-12 lead, highlighted by the return of Ongenda to the lineup and a pair of early threes by Johnson. St. John's fought back to tie the game at 24 with under eight minutes to go in the half. DePaul continued to answer, firing off a 10-2 run for a seen-point, 34-27 lead.
St. John's scored the first 10 points of the second half for their first advantage of the game. DePaul would jump back in front with a one-point lead on back-to-back baskets from Gibson and Johnson. The game continued as a back-and-forth battle before St. John's tied the game at 76 with 29 seconds to go. Jalen Terry notched his first basket since Jan. 4 on a huge three-pointer, but St. John's answered with their own, sending the game into overtime.
Both teams struggled offensively in the overtime periods, as all four of DePaul's overtime points came from Nelson. Nelson made a pair of free throws with 1:55 to go, for a one-point DePaul lead. St. John's had an opportunity to win the game at the free throw line, but Dylan Addae-Wusu went 1-of-2 at the line to once again keep the score even. St. John's took control in the second overtime period as DePaul struggled to ifnd a shot after Ongenda and Gibson fouled out.

OF NOTE
- DePaul's 41 team rebounds and 19 assists were the most for the Blue Demons against any BIG EAST opponent this season.
- The Blue Demons recorded a season-high 13 blocks which were the most for DePaul since at least 2012.
- The 13 blocks are tied for the fifth most across Division 1 this season and most by any BIG EAST team.
- Ongenda's eight blocks tied a career-high and rank second all-time at DePaul for blocks in a single-game.
- Johnson and Nelson both played a career-high minutes. Johnson played the full 50 minutes of regulation and overtime.
