Anna Wohlers drives in career-best five runs on 3-for-4 outing
CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Blue Demons closed out the weekend with a win at the Coach B Classic on Sunday as sophomore Anna Wohlers went 3-for-4 with a career-high five RBI in a 7-0 victory over Northern Kentucky.
Â
DePaul (6-7) recorded a season-best 13 hits with Wohlers leading the way while Brooke Johnson, Tori Meyer, Alexis Houge and Riley Pool all tallied multi-hit outings. Johnson and Meyer each drove in one run apiece.
Â
Sophomore right-hander Katey Pierce went the distance in the circle for the first shutout of her career, surrendering just three hits for a total of three runners on base. Pierce moved to 1-0 on the season in her second start of the 2023 campaign.
Â
How It Happened
A four-run third inning provided the spark for DePaul with Addison Talbot reaching on a one-out double to right field and Houge joining her on base with a seven pitch walk before Johnson sent a double-down the left field line to bring Talbot across and put the Blue Demons on the board. In the next at bat, Wohlers ripped one to center clearing the bases and extending the lead to three making way for Meyer to bring her across on an RBI-single up the middle.
Â
The fifth inning saw eight batters come to the dish as the Blue Demons added three more on a Wohlers three-run homer. Houge knocked a leadoff single to left and Johnson followed right behind her to set the table for Wohlers' fourth home run of the season.
Â
Pierce retired the final nine batters for the Norse to close out the victory.
Â
Up Next
DePaul will travel east for the first time this season for the Palmer Park Clash in Charlottesville, Va. The Blue Demons will face off against Saint Francis, Fairfield and Virginia March 3-5.
