Blue Demons use big second inning to power past the Huskies
CHICAGO – DePaul softball opened a three-game set with league-leader Connecticut in a big way on Friday, taking down the visiting Huskies 5-2.
The Blue Demons used a five-run second inning and saw freshman right-hander Abbey Pochie put together a fantastic outing in the circle to snap a nine-game skid.
DePaul (13-29, 5-14 BIG EAST) put eight of nine batters on base at least once in the contest and used timely hits to manufacture runs. Riley Pool plated a pair of runs on a base hit to right field while shortstop Nicole Sullivan came around in the top of the order to clear the bases.
Pochie threw six innings, surrendered five hits and eight walks, while stranding 10 UConn runners aboard including at least one in scoring position in every inning. The Chicago native picked up the second win of her career in the circle.
Senior Brenna Smith would come on in relief in the seventh inning and face four batters while allowing just one hit.
How it Happened
The first inning saw UConn (31-12, 18-4) load the bases on a trio of walks, before Pochie worked of a jam and left the runners stranded.
Â
Pochie saw more of the same in the second inning as a leadoff base hit advanced all the way around to third, but the freshman pulled the string and notched her third strikeout of the day to strand another run.
Â
In the home half of the second, Anna Wohlers was hit by a pitch before Carly Alvers and Grace Frazier walked to load the bases with just one retired. Pool put the Blue Demons on the board with a first pitch single to right field to push the lead runners across and Frazier to third. Addison Talbot drew the third walk of the inning to load the bases once more and Sullivan brought them all home with a stand up double to left center. DePaul led 5-0 after two innings.
Â
The two squads saw a combined nine batters reach in the next four innings, but neither side would push across a run.
Â
Down to three outs in the seventh the Huskies wouldn't go away easily as the first three batters of the inning reached on a pair of walks and a base hit. An RBI-single would break up the shutout and a second run would cross as the Blue Demons turned a much needed double play, but Smith would catch the final batter looking to claim the victory.
