Blue Demons take series from first-place UConn
CHICAGO – It was a thrilling afternoon at Cacciatore Stadium on Saturday, as an Anna Wohlers walk-off double lifted DePaul to a 3-2 win over Connecticut to clinch the series victory.
Trailing 2-0 after through four and a half innings, the Blue Demons battled back to tie the game in the fifth and later claim the win behind stout pitching from freshman Bella Nigey and timely at bats at the dish.
Senior Tori Meyer leveled the game in the fifth inning on a two-RBI single while Wohlers provided the game-winning strike.
The Blue Demons put the pressure on the UConn pitching staff, drawing six walks and running plenty of counts full.
Brooke Johnson reached on three occasions and was responsible for the game-winning run after being hit by a pitch in the seventh.
Nigey threw a complete game, allowing just four hits and two runs while stranding four Husky runners in scoring position. The Iowa native moved to 6-7 on the season.
How it Happened
UConn (31-13, 18-5 BIG EAST) put the pressure on early, pushing across runs in the first and second, creating an early deficit for the Blue Demons.
Â
The fourth inning saw the pitchers dealing with just one base runner between the two sides.
Â
DePaul (14-29, 6-14) battled back in the fifth as Nicole Sullivan drew a five-pitch walk before Johnson and Wohlers loaded the bases with free passes of their own. Meyer came to the dish and ripped a first-pitch ball through the left side to bring Sullivan and Johnson around and knot the score, 2-2.
Â
The top of the seventh inning saw the leadoff batter reach on a walk and advance to second on a sac bunt, but Nigey stranded the go-ahead run on a strikeout and infield grounder.
Â
In the home half of the final frame, Johnson battled in a nine-pitch at bat before taking a base on a hit by pitch. Wohlers came to the dish and took the first pitch deep off the wall to push Johnson 180 feet and claim the series for the Blue Demons. Â
