Blue Demons Extinguish the Flames

DePaul defeats UIC, 1-0
CHICAGO – DePaul women's soccer (3-1-1) nabbed another win, Thursday evening, after extinguishing the UIC Flames (1-3-2), 1-0. The Blue Demons were quick to score a goal in the 13th minute of the game, securing an early lead. UIC was unable to respond before the end of the 90 minutes as DePaul picked up its third win of the season.Â
Â"It was great to get an early goal and take the lead which is something we haven't done yet this season," said head coach Michele O'Brien. "UIC was in the game all the way to the final whistle and put us under pressure throughout the game. Our team showed great fight and determination to keep a clean sheet."
ÂAt the start of the match both teams rushed the field and generated shots within the first 10 minutes of the game. Beth Smyth brought the ball up from midfield and broke UIC's back line to make the game winning connection for the Blue Demons.Â
ÂUIC looked for an answer during the remainder of the first half, but only put up two shots thanks to defensive efforts by DePaul's Lina Dantes, Grace Menser and Bella Hanisch. Ellie Mink also helped keep the Flames at bay in the midfield.Â
ÂIn the second 45 minutes, UIC laid on the pressure, generating 10 shots against goalkeeper Elena Milam. Milam was put to the test but managed to save all five shots on goal. Center backs, Ryan Skall and Kristen Schwartz, fought back against UIC's attack, keeping their advances off target. The Flames were unable to make a connection before the end of the game.Â
ÂUP NEXT: The Blue Demons host cross town rival Loyola Chicago,Sunday, Sep. 9th for a 1 p.m. matchup. The match will be streamed on FloSports.Â
