CHICAGO – DePaul golf added Mark Haines to its coaching staff, as announced by head coach Marty Schiene on Wednesday. Haines joins the DePaul coaching staff following four years as the head golf coach at Chicago State in addition to six years of head coaching experience at Governor State and Illinois Institute of Technology.
In August 2019, Haines took over leadership of the Chicago State men's golf program. He helped the Cougars earn three individual tournament winners. The team also won a tournament for the first time in school history in 2023 at the HBCU Classic. Under Haines, the men's program also placed second in the PGA Works National Championship. In his four years, he helped lower the program's scoring average to a record breaking 303 in 2023, down from 318 when he stepped foot on campus. Haines helped recruit five athletes who would end their careers in the top-five season scoring leaders in program history. Chicago State's student-athletes totaled 17 Western Athletic All-Academic Scholars and 24 Chicago State Athlete-Scholars during Haines' tenure.
Under Haines' leadership at Governors State, Haines led a new men's and women's program starting in 2015. Within three seasons, he elevated the men's team from 10th to 4th place in the CCAC. During his tenure, the men's team won five tournament titles and 11 podium top three finishes. His teams also excelled in the classroom with three NAIA Scholar-Athlete Awards and 11 CCAC All-Academic Awards. In 2016, the Governors State women's team was recognized as an Academic National Champion by the Golf COaches Association of America. In four seasons under the helm, Haines led his teams to eight NAIA Scholar-Athletes.
Haines is a part of a three generation family of college golfers and athletes. His father, Arthur, lettered in golf and basketball at Richmond, after returning from the army as a World War II veteran. His daughter, Lindsey, was a two-time NCAA DIII All-American, two-time conference champion and three-time national tournament qualifier at Illinois Wesleyan. His son, Keith, played three seasons at Eckerd College, before concluding his career at Chicago State where he played under current DePaul head coach, Marty Schiene.
Haines was a four-year letterwinner and four sport athlete at Illinois Institute of Technology from 1976 to 1981, in addition to being a team captain and all-conference player. While we was recruited to play basketball, Haines also excelled in golf, cross country and bowling. After receiving his MBA from IIT, Haines moved into the business world, but always stayed connected to the game of golf.
Haines resides in Crete, Illinois with his wife Kimberly, and also oversees and owns Lincoln Oaks Golf Course with his brother, John.
