Blue Demons Fall at No. 14 Georgetown
10/26/2024 2:18:00 PM | MEN'S SOCCER
WASHINGTON, D.C. – After early attacking chances were wiped away, DePaul men's soccer couldn't quite keep pace with the depth of 14th-ranked Georgetown in a 4-0 setback on Saturday afternoon at Shaw Field.
Â
The Blue Demons were the aggressors early with a pair of quality looks on goal from graduate forward Logan Finnegan in the first five minutes of the match, including an opportunity with the keeper drawn out, but couldn't capitalize before Georgetown converted on four of their eight shots on goal throughout the remainder of the contest.
Â
With the decision, DePaul falls to 5-7-3 in 2024 including a 1-4-2 mark in BIG EAST action while Georgetown moves to 8-3-5 on the campaign and 5-1-1 in conference play.
Â
The Hoyas posted 27 shots to DePaul's seven including an 8-1 margin with shots on target.
Â
Finnegan's three shots on the day led the way for DePaul while four other Blue Demons tallied one apiece. Senior goalkeeper Santiago Davila made three saves in 67 minutes of action while Clayton Brooks made his first save of the season in 22 minutes off the bench.
Â
How It Happened
Finnegan was aggressive early, taking the first two shots of the match in the fifth and sixth minute, respectively, with both just missing wide left of the cage.
Â
Davila made a pair of acrobatic saves at point blank range to keep the score level through 15 minutes.
Â
The Hoyas earned their fifth corner of the match in the 21st minute and moments later played a ball through the center of the field for Matthew Van Horn to take a one-timer and finish in the upper 90, past the outstretched arms of Davila to make it 1-0.
Â
After Noeh Hernandez's first quality look of the game was blocked in the 40th minute, the Hoyas strung together a counter attack with contact in the box allowing for David Arrutia to capitalize on a broken play to put a ball past Davila on a sharp angle and make it a 2-0 score before halftime.Â
Â
In the early moments of the second half, the Blue Demons found their footing and owned possession with chances coming from Chase Stegall and moments later George Wyatt on a free kick just outside the box.
Â
Georgetown found the back of the net for the third time in the 57th minute, putting a rebound home from the top of the box to widen its advantage to 3-0.
Â
The Hoyas added a fourth tally on a corner kick in the 61st minute.
