
Blue Demons Drop BIG EAST Opener in Overtime

Skogman scores game-high 22 points
CHICAGO – In a tightly contested back-and-forth contest, DePaul men's basketball dropped its BIG EAST opener to Providence, 72-68, in overtime Tuesday evening from Wintrust Arena. The game featured 10 lead changes and seven ties as both teams held double-digit leads before Providence ultimately pulled away in the overtime period.
David Skogman had a game-high 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting that included six made three-pointers. He also added six rebounds and a pair of assists to round out his season-best scoring performance. Jacob Meyer also contributed double-digits with 12 points on the night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Providence (7-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) took an early lead on 3-of-5 shooting from deep, before DePaul (7-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) bounced back on a three-pointer from JJ Traynor. The Blue Demons forced three-straight turnovers from the Friars on their way to a 19-3 run, giving DePaul a 24-18 lead. The Blue Demons used a pair of three pointers by Skogman and Isaiah Rivera, extending to a 10-point lead. Providence punched back with seven-straight points as Depaul held a three-point, 30-27, lead going into halftime.
The Friars immediately took the lead, 31-30, out of halftime as DePaul's defense remained strong, keeping it under a three-point game. As the Blue Demons were down five with under 10 minutes left to play, Skogman hit a three-pointer, followed by one from Meyer to flip the score in DePaul's favor, 46-44. The teams began to battle back-and-forth remaining even with each other until the Blue Demons had 10 unanswered points, led by threes from Conor Enright and Meyer. However, Providence responded with their own run, tying the game at 58 with less than a minute to play. With neither team able to secure a final basket, the game went into overtime before the Friars ultimately secured the win off baskets from Bensley Joseph and Bryce Hopkins.

- Tuesday was Skogman's fifth career game scoring 20 or more points, while also surpassing 100 made three-pointers in his career.
- The overtime game was the third in the all-time series between the two teams, all of which have come in the last four years.
- Meyer recorded his 40th career game with five or more points, marking every game of his collegiate career.
- Enright recorded seven assists for his 40th career-game with three or more, and his seventh this season with more than six.
- Troy D'Amico had a season-high four assists.
