Blue Demons drop second BIG EAST contest
JAMAICA, N.Y. – Despite a 17-point performance by sophomore Layden Blocker, DePaul men's basketball could not find an answer for St. John's as they were defeated, 89-61, Tuesday night on the road. Blocker had his second-best scoring performance of the season, including a career-high seven made free throws while also contributing four rebounds. He was joined in double-digit scoring by Conor Enright who added 12 points and three assists on 4-of-6 shooting.
HOW IT HAPPENED
St. John's (9-2, 1-0 BIG EAST) struck early for an 8-3 advantage before JJ Traynor drained a three-pointer to keep DePaul (8-3, 0-2 BIG EAST) right there. After back-to-back baskets for St. John's, DePaul went inside for five-straight baskets and kept the score close, 16-19. Still down, 25-18, DePaul fired off three-straight buckets but St. John's offense kept moving as they outscored DePaul 7-2 in the final two minutes of the half.
Out of halftime, DePaul was unable to answer as St. John's opened the period with a 17-2 run while shooting 6-of-8. The Red Storm nabbed a season-high 14 steals keeping DePaul's offense off the board. St. John's took a 76-43 lead before DePaul tried to answer from three with two-straight three-pointers made by Troy D'Amico and CJ Gunn, however, couldn't gain any further ground.
