Three Blue Demons record home runs against NKU, NDSU
WILMINGTON, N.C. - DePaul softball dropped two morning matchups on Sunday, falling 8-5 to Northern Kentucky and 3-2 to North Dakota State.
DePaul (0-5) saw quick offensive work in both games. Fifth year Brooke Johnson hit a pair of home runs in the two games, including a three-run shot to center field against Northern Kentucky. Also against Northern Kentucky, freshman Brooke Cwick went 3-for-4 with a double, a two-run home run and a single.Â
Junior third baseman Carly Alvers recorded her first home run of the season in addition to shortstop Bibianna Rodriguez who tallied her first hits and run batted in as a Blue Demon. Junior second baseman Baylee Cosgrove added in three hits of her own against the Bison.
Brenna Smith got the start against Northern Kentucky, throwing five innings and giving up three runs on four hits. Smith also tallied three strikeouts before Freshman Lydia Ettema came on in relief for 0.1 innings. Katey Pierce also made an appearance.
Bella Nigey took the circle for game two against North Dakota State, going the full six innings and surrendering three runs on nine hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
GAME 1 - Northern Kentucky 8, DePaul 5
Johnson hit a long ball for her first home run of the season, bringing home Cwick and Riley Pool for a three-run shot in the first inning. Cwick went yard for her first career home run, bumping the score to 5-0. In the third inning, Smith retired the side and had put away the whole Norse lineup without a hit.Â
Smith gave up her first hits of the game in the fifth inning, as Northern Kentucky plated three runs on four hits. In the sixth, the Norse brought home five runs to take a three-run lead. The Blue Demons looked to respond, as Talbot got aboard with one out in the seventh but nothing else was able to come of it.
GAME 2 - North Dakota State 3, DePaul 2
Johnson and Alvers hit back-to-back solo shots in the top of the first inning to put the Blue Demons up, 2-0. The Bison responded with a single, and scored on a throwing error to cut the lead in half, 2-1. In the second, Cosgrove and Rodriguez hit consecutive singles to give DePaul five hits through the first eight batters. The Blue Demons threatened in the fourth with the bases loaded, but a double play ended the frame.
NDSU responded in the fifth, scoring two runs to take a 3-2 lead. The Blue Demons looked to get the offense going again, as Cosgrove recorded a single and Pool earned a walk, but were unable to even the game.
